Marilyn Monroe's Belongings Up For Auction

Marilyn Monroe is still a legend of the silver screen after all these years. She always will be.

Nearly 54 years after Marilyn Monroe tragically passed away, fans are still clamoring to own a piece of the screen icon.

The Gentlemen Prefer Blondes star died in 1962 at the age of 36.

She left a large collection of personal items to her acting teacher, Lee Strasberg; his estate is now selling them off.

The auction, set to take place in November, includes more than 500 lots and will tour the world first.

Items include a monogrammed jewelry box of Joe DiMaggio's and an old address book.

There is also a letter that Marilyn wrote to her psychiatrist detailing her time at in a psychiatric ward, which she was committed to shortly after her divorce from Arthur Miller

In November, a collection of the star's personal items — including handwritten notes, receipts, clothing, accessories, and jewelry — will go up for auction at Julien's Auctions.

More than 500 lots of her belongings will be at the auction, which will take place in Los Angeles, and in total they are expected to fetch between $2 million and $4 million.

The items up for grabs were left to her acting mentor, Lee Strasberg, whom himself died in 1982, 20 years after Marilyn.

Julien's Auctions said the items have never been on the auction block before, and are being offered for sale by the estate of Strasberg. The actor, director, and teacher also taught stars including James Dean, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, and Jane Fonda.

'Marilyn was a complex and beguiling figure in her lifetime, leaving generations of adoring fans to speculate, infer, and debate about her life,' Strasberg's wife, Anna Strasberg, said in a statement. 'What has resulted is a prismatic kaleidoscope image built upon both fact and fantasy.'

Many of the items are preserved exactly as they were when Monroe died of a drug overdose in 1962, at the age of 36.

The collection will first go on tour in Europe, Asia, South America, and the U.S. before being sold off on November 19 and 20.

'This is one of the most important and historic auctions of Marilyn Monroe ever,' said Martin Nolan, the Executive Director of Julien's Auctions. 'This diverse collection gives us a most intimate glimpse of the screen legend. Never before have there been so many important artifacts from the life and career of the much loved global icon Marilyn Monroe.'

One of those artifacts include a small gold minaudiere, which is being sold with two dimes, eight Philip Morris cigarettes, and a used Revlon lipstick in the vibrant red shade Bachelor's Carnation. It is expected to fetch between $15,000 and $20,000.

'That's a really neat piece and it's like a time warp right back to the 1940s when Marilyn was just becoming famous,' said Mr. Nolan.

In 1999 Marilyn's personal make-up case was auctioned by Christies. It sold for $266,500.
